– Dr. Mohammed Alhemyari is a distinguished Consultant Ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma and cataract surgery, with special interests in glaucoma drainage devices. He earned his MBBS from Sana’a University, Yemen, and completed his postgraduate residency training in ophthalmology through the Arab Board of Health Specializations. He further holds the Jordanian Board in Ophthalmology, is a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCSEd), and a Fellow of the International Council of Ophthalmology (FICO).
– Dr. Alhemyari pursued advanced subspecialty fellowship training in glaucoma at the renowned Sankara Eye Hospital in Bangalore, India—one of Asia’s leading tertiary eye care centers. He is an active national and international lecturer and invited speaker in the fields of glaucoma and cataract surgery.
– Currently, he serves as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine, Sana’a University, where he is deeply involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. Dr. Walid completed his (M.B.B.Ch) Bachelor in Medicines and General Surgery from Faculty of Medicine Alexandria University one of the leading Medical Schools in Egypt; followed by Master Degree in Ophthalmology from the same medical school after three years of residency. In 2002, after finishing his exams and accepted as member of the International Council Ophthalmology – Cambridge UK. In 2004, he completed his fellowship in Royal College of Physicians and Surgeon in Glasgow UK.

Waleed Ghobashy

Associated Professor and Consultant of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University, Egypt. After serving for many years in Magrabi Eye Hospitals and centers and Moorfields Eye Hospital Center, Abu Dhabi as consultant ophthalmology. Dr. Waleed started a new role in January 2025 as a consultant of Opthalmology, Samaya Specialized Center, Abu Dhabi UAE
Dr. Waleed started his career in the ophthalmology field in 1996 as a resident in Suez Canal University Hospital, Egypt. He received his master degree in ophthalmology in 2000 in field of cataract surgery. He received advanced ophthalmology training from 2000 to 2005, concluded by passing MD exams , and getting his PhD thesis in “Ocular changes after myopic LASIK” from Faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University, Egypt. His supervisor was the Refractive Pioneer Prof. Dr. Karem Kolkailah. Dr. Ghobashy then moved to Knoxville, TN, USA to act as the clinical fellow of Dr. Steven Sterling MD; the distinguished phaco refractive surgeon of East Tennessee 2005 to 2007.
Dr. Waleed Ghobashy then returned home to act as clinical lecturer and consultant of ophthalmology in faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University. From 2007 till present, Dr. Ghobashy did extensive research and clinical work in refractive surgeries, cataract, glaucoma, medical retina and Electrophysiological diagnosis of ocular diseases, with over 30 published research papers in many regional and international scientific journals, gained the title of Assistant Professor of ophthalmology in 2014.
Dr. Ghobashy is a member of many ophthalmology associations, and a speaker in the annual meetings of the most prestigious ophthalmological societies including American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), Egyptian Society of Ophthalmology (ESO), Emirates Society of Ophthalmology.

Prasan Rao

Dr. Prasan Rao has been treating patients with ophthalmic (eye) conditions since 1995. His areas of interest include vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina, ocular inflammation & uveitis, retinopathy of prematurity, ocular imaging and phacoemulsification. He has been practising in Dubai since 2003. In Dubai, he was the first to introduce scleral buckling for management of retinal detachments in retinopathy of prematurity in 2003, and intravitreal antiVEGF injections for active ROP in 2008 in the UAE. In 2006, he was the first to perform combined half-fluence photodynamic therapy and intravitreal lucentis injection for wet AMD in the Gulf region. In 2009, he setup the ROP registry in Dubai and Al Wasl Hospitals. In 2016, he was amongst the first to perform 27gauge vitrectomy. He has performed well over 3000 cataract surgeries (phacoemulsification) and over 2500 posterior segment surgeries including combined phaco-vitrectomies in UAE. He is a Fellow in Vitreo- Retinal Diseases and Surgery from Sankara Nethralaya & Vision Research Foundation, Chennai, India, and in Ophthalmology from The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He is board certified by the National Board for Ophthalmology (India). He is a Member of European Society of Vitreoretinal Surgery (EVRS), an International Member of American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), Member of American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS). He has been awarded with “International Ophthalmology Education Award” in 2009 and “International Ophthalmology Scholar Award” in 2012 by American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has a number of publications in peer reviewed journals and 2 book chapters to his credit. In 2022, he was awarded for his efforts and ongoing commitment for continuous education from UAE to the world by the Ministry of Interior, UAE.

Maria Jesus Chaves

María J. Chaves-Samaniego, MD. PhD. is a Spanish Consultant Ophthalmologist, specialized in Glaucoma and Cataract, at Mediclinic Parkview Hospital, and Clinical Lecturer at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Science (MBRU), Dubai, UAE.
During her surgical career, she has performed numerous intraocular surgeries including deep sclerectomy, trabeculectomy, MIGS and glaucoma drainage devices, and currently she specializes in complex glaucoma surgery.
The University of Granada, Spain, granted her with a Master (MS) in Tissular Engineering in 2013 and a PhD in Preventive Medicine and Public Health (Ophthalmology), in 2021.
After her training as Glaucoma Specialist at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Florida, United States, in 2018, she practiced as glaucoma and cataract specialist in Madrid and Alicante, at Vissum, Miranza group.
Throughout her career, she has authored and co-authored several peer-review papers, book chapters and presentations in national and international meetings, and she currently collaborates as a reviewer for some of the most relevant scientific journals in Glaucoma. She has led as principal investigator in several clinical trials and studies on glaucoma, cataract surgery and retina.

Irene Sofia Joseph

Irene Sophia Joseph is a dedicated optometrist with over 20 years of clinical experience, currently practicing as a specialist optometrist at Genesis HealthCare Centre in Dubai. A graduate of the Elite School of Optometry in India, she has built her career around advancing vision care, with a special focus on vision rehabilitation and holistic, patient-centered services.
Her expertise includes conducting comprehensive low vision assessments and prescribing customised optical and electronic aids to maximise functional vision.
Alongside her low vision work, Irene has 15 years of specialization in orthokeratology and myopia management, holding a fellowship from the International Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control. She is also a Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association and highly skilled in fitting specialty contact lenses for irregular corneas and managing ocular surface disorders. She also provides vision therapy for binocular vision anomalies.

Ihab El Bably

Dr. El-Bably had served as the chief of Pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at University hospitals of Christian Albrecht University in Kiel , Friedrich Schiller University of Jena and Central Hospital in Bremen and as chair of ophthalmology in University Medical School (Department of Orthoptic and Pleoptic ) – CAU Kiel in 2002

Ibraheem El Ghrably

Dr El-Ghrably, MS, PhD, FRCOphth is a staff physician in the eye institute at Cleveland clinic Abu Dhabi. Prior to joining Cleveland clinic Abu Dhabi he was a consultant retina specialist at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, UK. Dr El-Ghrably was the Royal College tutor for the department of ophthalmology, at James Cook University Hospital, also he was the educational and clinical supervisor for specialty trainee doctors. He chaired the Research and Development (R&D) lead for the division of surgery in JCUH for a while and was the Ophthalmology representative for North East Local Eye Health Network (LEHN).

After her masters in surgery in ophthalmology, Dr. Fairooz proceeded to complete subspecialty fellowship training in Ophthalmic Plastic, Aesthetics, Orbital surgery and Ocular Oncology at the prestigious LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India. Further, Dr Fairooz moved on to Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, U.S.A with Thomas Jefferson University for training in Ocular Oncology. She also pursued her Oculoplasty training at Shiley Eye Institute, SanDiego, USA. She is a fellow of American College of Surgeons.
Having participated in numerous research projects and the recipient of various awards in her career, Dr. Fairooz was conferred the ‘American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) International Achievement Award’ and the ‘Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Achievement Award’. She was also adjudged the ‘International Hero of India’ by the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS).
Currently, being a member of various international and national Societies, Dr Fairooz is the Vice President of Asia Pacific Society of Ocular Oncology Pathology (APSOOP) and, was recently elected as the Scientific Committee member of All India Ophthalmological Society. Muhammad Amer Yaqub

After graduating in 1984 from Army Medical College as the Best Graduate he completed his Fellowship in Ophthalmology from CPSP in 1992 and from Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1994. He then finished his fellowship in Oculoplastics and Orbital surgery from Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 1996.
Following his retirement from Pakistan Army, he is in private practice working as a Consultant Ophthalmic, Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgeon.
He is an active supervisor for CPSP since 2002 and has supervised more than 20-30 trainees for FCPS in Ophthalmology so far. He has also been an examiner for FCPS and MCPS since then. Since 2015, he is also examiner for Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.

He balances his clinical duty with clinical and epidemiological research works mainly in diabetic retinopathy (DR) and other retinal vascular diseases. He has an outstanding record of research and publications in the relevant field with over 50 papers published in high quality peer-reviewed journals, including Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology and Diabetologia, 1 book and 2 book chapters published nationally dedicated for young ophthalmologist and ophthalmology trainee.
Prof. Sasongko has led several broad-based research projects in the epidemiology of DR as Principal Investigators and has received more than US$ 2.5 millions of grant funding in total to initiate and establish nation-wide DR screening program in Indonesia. Recently, his team has successfully designed and implemented fast-track DR network that bridges the service between primary health care and tertiary eye care to accelerate diabetic eye care service for patients with DR needing treatment and reduce the number of diabetic eye blindness. More recently, Dr. Sasongko and his team have developed an innovative Rapid Assessment of DR (RADR) system – a low-cost, portable automated DR screening system using artificial intelligence to screen vision-threatening DR in the community, which has been piloted in some provinces in Indonesia. Muneer Otri

Professor Ahmad Muneer Otri is currently serving as a Senior Consultant in Ophthalmology at The View Hospital in Qatar. He specializes in Glaucoma and Cataract surgeries and has been in the field since 2002, with extensive medical and surgical training in the UK. He is also a Clinical Professor in Surgery at Qatar University.
Prof. Muneer graduated from the medical school of the University of Aleppo, Syria, and completed his core Ophthalmology training at Damascus University Hospital. Nikoloz Labauri

Dr. Nikoloz Labauri, is an Ophthalmologist and the Founder of the DaVinci Eye Clinic in Tbilisi, Georgia. After completing three years of residency in Ophthalmology, he has accomplished several long-term fellowships in Vitreo-Retina, Cornea, and Refractive Surgery between 2007 and 2012. He has performed thousands of vitreoretinal, glaucoma, cataract, cornea, and refractive surgeries. In addition to his busy ophthalmology practice, Dr. Labauri is actively involved in clinical research and scientific writing. Özlem Evren Kemer

Professor Ozlem Evren Kemer, MD, President of the Society of Cornea and Ocular Surface (TSCOS) – Turkish Ophthalmological Association, serves as Director of the Eye Clinic & Residency Education Program and the Eye Bank at Ankara Bilkent City Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Türkiye. She earned her medical degree from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, where she also completed her ophthalmology residency. She pursued advanced fellowship training in glaucoma at Harvard Medical School’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) in Dallas, followed by a fellowship in Cornea and External Eye Diseases at UTSW. Şengül Özdek

Prof. Dr. Şengül Özdek was born in 1971 in Turkey. She had her medical education in Hacettepe University and her residency in Ophthalmology in Gazi University in Ankara. She is a faculty member in Gazi University Retina division since 1999. She studied in Retina division of Miami University, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute with Prof. Dr. Harry Flynn in 2004. She had been to Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan as a clinical observer in pediatric retina clinic under the supervision of Dr. Trese and Dr. Capone in April 2010. ROP and pediatric vitreoretinal surgery (ROP, PFV, FEVR, Coats) are her primary interests.
She is an examiner in the European Board of Ophthalmology Examinations and became FEBO (Fellow of European Board of Ophthalmology) in 2017. She has been awarded with the “EVRS Ambassador Award” by European Vitreoretinal Society in 2017 and with “Honor Award” by American Society of Retina Specialists in 2018, with “Achievement Award” by American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2020 and with “Senior Honor Award” by American Society of Retina Specialists in 2024. Her vitreoretinal surgical videos were awarded by EVRS, Mediterretina and Turkish Ophthalmology Societies. She has been selected in the Class of 2020-2021 by Retina Hall of Fame. A/Prof Shamira Perera is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist and current head of the Glaucoma Service at SNEC and set up the Complex Anterior Segment Surgery in SNEC in 2022. Sibel Kadayifcilar

Born in Ankara, she completed her education at TED Ankara College (Primary Section), Ankara Atatürk Anatolian High School (Middle Section), Ankara Science High School, and Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine (English) before finishing her Ophthalmology specialization at the Department of Ophthalmology, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1994. From 1995 to 1998, she worked as a specialist and assistant professor at Başkent University’s Department of Ophthalmology. In September 1998, she began working at Hacettepe University’s Department of Ophthalmology as an assistant professor, was promoted to associate professor in November 2000, and achieved the title of professor in April 2006. She speaks English and German and is currently the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at Hacettepe University’s Faculty of Medicine.
She has served as a visiting faculty member at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology, Moorfields Eye Hospital (London, UK), and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of Wisconsin (Madison, Wisconsin, USA).
She specializes in retinal-vitreous diseases and uveitis. She has presented papers at national and international conferences and written articles and book chapters on these topics. She participates in international multicenter studies as a researcher and coordinator.
She has served in the Executive Committees of the Turkish Ophthalmology Association’s Uvea Behçet and Medical Retina Units and is currently the Head of the Medical Retina Unit. I was born in 1975 in Turkey. I graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1999. I completed my ophthalmology training at Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital in 2003 and graduated as an ophthalmologist after completing my thesis named “ Ophthalmological findings in children with cerebral palsy”. I had a retina course at the Retina Clinic of Gazi University Faculty of Medicine between October 2006 and April 2007. I completed the thesis-based master’s program in the field of Low Vision Rehabilitation at Ankara University and received my master’s degree in 2014. I passed the European Ophthalmology Board exams in 2017 and received the FEBO title and diploma. I had a course of retina in the Medical Retina Department of Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2017 in London.
I worked in the largest neonatal intensive care unit in Turkiye as a consultant ophthalmologist for retinopathy of prematurity between 2004 and 2019. I have followed thousands of premature infants and treated more than a thousand ROP cases. I worked as an Associate Professor at the University of Health Sciences between 2017 and 2022. I was appointed to a professorship in 2022, and I work at TOBB Economics and Technology University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology as a professor since then, and I have been the Head of Ophthalmology Department since March 2023.
I have more than 40 articles published in international journals and more than 20 articles published in national journals. These studies have been cited more than 1000 times by several papers. I presented nearly 100 papers at international and national meetings. I have many chapters in ophthalmology books and I am the editor of the book named “Medicosocial Approach to People with Low Vision”.
My main medical interests include pediatric eye diseases, low vision rehabilitation, retinopathy of prematurity, cerebral visual impairment and retinal diseases. I am a member of the Turkish Ophthalmology Association (TOA). I am an active member of the TOA Medical Retina Unit. I am a board member and an active member of the TOA Optical Refraction and Low Vision Rehabilitation Unit. I am the education manager of the Retinopathy of Prematurity Commission.

Ahmed Sallam

MD, PhD, FRCOphth, is a Professor of Retina and Uveitis and the Director of Uveitis Service at the Jones Eye Institute, UAMS College of Medicine, Arkansas.
He is the recipient of the John Nutt Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology with dedication to research and educational speaking. Dr. Sallam authored more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, and 20 book chapters, presented at premier ophthalmology conferences and meetings, and has been an investigator on numerous uveitis and retinal studies.
Within the Jones Eye Institute, Dr. Sallam assumes the roles of Quality Officer and Director of Clinical Research. His research pursuits encompass surgical benchmarking, big data outcomes, and the exploration of novel treatments in retina and uveitis.
Dr. Sallam’s commitment to medical education and surgical simulation is evident through his roles as an educator and trainer for residents and fellows in both Europe and the USA. Currently serving as the Residency Program Director, he also holds the position of Co-Director of the Vitreoretinal and Uveitis Fellowship Program, at the Jones Eye Institute.

Fahd Quhill
